Doing Nothing Is Harder Than You Think
Take Actions That Actually Move You Toward Your Dream Role
The more you do nothing, the more you accept your current situation. Subpar progress becomes your norm. Unideal pay becomes permanent. Stagnation quietly takes hold, turning into your future.
Taking action matters, but not all actions are created equal. Some activities, like endlessly tweaking your resume, filling your calendar with informational interviews or sending out applications without internal referrals, can give the illusion of progress. In reality, these efforts often fall flat, leading to little or no movement toward your goals.
If you want meaningful results, you need meaningful action. Start with something that gets you closer to offers. For me, that’s networking mapping.
Here’s how it works:
Pick a target company. I always look at BD roles or other teams on the revenue-generating side. I focus my efforts there.
Map your network. Who do I know with ins at this company? Are there any super connectors who could broker an intro to a hiring manager or recruiter? Have any of my trailblazers worked there before?
Schedule calls. Once I identify the right connectors and trailblazers, I set up calls with them to deepen relationships, exchange value, and open doors.
These steps move the needle. They get you closer to interviews—and offers.
Or, you could do nothing. Nothing gets normalized. Stagnation becomes the standard. You let opportunities slip by because “now isn’t the right time.” You wake up six months or a year from now, still in the same spot, wondering why things haven’t improved.
Which path will you take?
