I’ve been where you are: staring at a job that used to feel exciting but now feels like it’s holding you back. The days are predictable. The paycheck isn’t cutting it. The balance between your work and your life tipped over a long time ago.
Those feelings don’t just go away. They grow. They gnaw at you until you’re forced to ask: Is this it? Or is there something better out there for me?
If you’re reading this, you’re already asking that question. Maybe you’ve even spotted a glimpse of what the “better” could be. AI is grabbing headlines, sparking conversations, and promising a new frontier for professionals who are ready to grow.
It’s a field overflowing with opportunity, but moving toward it can feel overwhelming. You don’t need to be a coder or have years of technical experience to carve out a place for yourself—but you do need a plan.
Here’s how I’d approach it.
Let’s Start with Why
Every transition starts with a reason. What’s yours?
For me, it was about two things: growth and autonomy. I wanted a career where I could stretch my skills, take on bigger challenges and have the freedom to define what success looked like. Staying where I was meant none of that would happen.
Maybe your “why” is different. Maybe it’s about finding work that aligns with your values or breaking into an industry that’s shaping the future. Whatever your reason, make it concrete. Write it down. When the process feels slow—or downright discouraging—you’ll need a reminder of why you’re doing this in the first place.
Find Your Fit
AI isn’t just for coders or data scientists. Businesses building AI tools need people who can forge partnerships, drive revenue and turn abstract ideas into real-world solutions.
I’ve seen people make this leap from all kinds of backgrounds: government, education, healthcare, etc.. They brought their skills, learned the landscape and built meaningful careers. You can do the same. There’s a place for you.
Start by asking yourself: What am I really good at? Maybe it’s negotiating deals. Simplifying complex concepts. Leading a team through chaos. These are the strengths you’ll carry into this new field.
Networking Isn’t as Scary as It Sounds
Networking doesn’t have to mean cold emails or awkward LinkedIn messages. It’s about connecting with people who can guide and support you. Here are three groups to focus on:
Trailblazers: People who’ve already transitioned into AI. Learn from their experiences and ask for advice. Follow their lead.
Connectors: Professionals in your circle who can make introductions or open doors. They obviate the need for an industry-specific resume. They understand how your unique background is a fit for AI companies.
Recruiters: Specialists who know the AI hiring landscape. They’ll improve your preparation for interview loops.
At the same time, don’t burn bridges in your current role. Strong relationships today could lead to unexpected opportunities tomorrow.
It’s a Journey, Not a Shortcut
Career shifts take time, and the road isn’t always smooth. You might send out applications and hear nothing. You might come close to an offer, only for it to fall through.
The key is to focus on progress, not perfection. Each step—whether it’s researching a company or refining your elevator pitch—brings you closer to your goal.
How My System Helps You Take Control
When I transitioned into tech, strategy—grounded in action—was what made the difference. It wasn’t quick or easy; it took me nearly two years to land my first role. Along the way, I figured out how to identify the right opportunities, play to my strengths, and build connections that opened real doors.
At its core, my system is about action. It’s designed to help you stop overthinking and start executing. Every step is focused on momentum, using proven tools and strategies to get you closer to your goals. Here’s how it works:
Take Action Now: Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Whether it’s reaching out to someone in your network or applying to a role that excites you, the key is starting immediately. Informational interviews are not your friend!
Make It Efficient: I created templates and scripts to save time and reduce stress. These aren’t generic one-size-fits-all tools—they can be tailored to help you stand out quickly and effectively.
Prioritize Networking: Networking is the most important part of my approach. It’s a way to open doors and uncover insights that aren’t always obvious. When done intentionally, it becomes a foundation that supports growth throughout your career.
This system is about more than landing your first role in AI. It’s about building the habits and connections that help you keep leveling up. Each step you take now sets the stage for future opportunities, ensuring your new career chapter doesn’t just start strong but continues to grow with every move you make.
